Burnley co-owner JJ Watt responds to Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany is on the verge of joining Bayern Munich after talks between the two clubs and the Clarets’ American co-owner has spoken out on social media.

Burnley investor JJ Watt has compared club ownership to American football amid Vincent Kompany’s shock move to Bayern Munich.

The former Manchester City star has been identified by club officials as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement after an exhaustive search. Negotiations between Bayern and Burnley continue. Watt, a former American football star, has owned a minority stake in the Clarets since May 2023. On Twitter, she compared the fast-paced nature of the coaching market to taking the field in the NFL.

Watt wrote: “People often ask if owning European football helps fill the adrenaline void of playing… There are definitely days,” along with a laughing emoji.

With Kompany set to join Bayern, any deal would end the German giants’ frustration as they try to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel. In February it was announced that he would be leaving the Allianz Arena this summer.

Tuchel was unable to leave with silverware and talks about him staying collapsed, but Bayern appear to have landed on their new coach. After attempts to sign Xabi Alonso and Ralf Rangnick failed, Bayern focused on Clarets boss Kompany, despite the former Manchester City captain failing to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

Bayern is close to reaching an agreement with Burnley to bring Kompany and his entire squad to Munich. If Burnley agree to Kompany’s release, it would prematurely end his time at Turf Moor. Kompany, signed until 2028, joined the Lancashire club after a mixed spell with Anderlecht in his home country of Belgium.
