Cold and windy weekend for the south

A high wind warning has been issued for the Dunedin and Clutha coasts over the weekend, while a cold front is expected to dump snow on parts of the south.

MetService says parts of the country will face several days of blustery south-westerly winds bringing cold temperatures, rain, big waves and snow.

The meteorologist’s strong wind alert is for 21 hours from 3pm on Saturday to noon on Sunday.

Winds are expected to approach strong gales, especially in more exposed areas.

MetService said scattered showers would become more persistent in Southland and Clutha from Saturday night, and snow could fall to 500 metres.

Most people can expect below average temperatures and those in windy regions should expect wind chills.
