Ten bags of Hag? Romano reveals Ratcliffe ’50/50′ ax with Pochettino ‘really open to possibility’

The chances of Sir Jim Ratcliffe sacking Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to appoint his “own manager” are now “50-50”, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Ten Hag may have just one game left as Manchester United manager after a bitterly disappointing Premier League campaign.

The FA Cup final against Manchester City this weekend represents a huge task for the Dutchman and his players, but winning the competition would allow the Red Devils to qualify for the Europa League at the expense of Chelsea, who would be relegated to the Europa Conference League, and Newcastle United out of European football entirely.

Bringing home the trophy could save Ten Hag’s job, although we have seen with Louis van Gaal in the past that this is not always enough as United manager.

There is much speculation surrounding its long-term future, as new co-owner Ratcliffe looks to turn around almost everything after his 25 per cent acquisition earlier this year.

He’s already brought in plenty of new faces, including Jason Wilcox, and Ten Hag could be a victim of the overhaul after a very poor season.

His future has been further questioned following Chelsea’s decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino, who was linked with the Man Utd job before Ten Hag took over in May 2022.

Following his sacking, Pochettino has been heavily linked with the Red Devils job and could be Ratcliffe’s man.

Romano reveals ‘possibility of Ten Hag being sacked by Man Utd’

According to Fabzirio Romano, the former Tottenham coach is looking forward to coaching again and is “really open to new possibilities.”

While this is likely to include work at Old Trafford, Romano insists there is “nothing to say” about a deal being reached or even the talks taking place.

Another manager linked with the job is Roberto De Zerbi, who has just left Brighton, but the Italian journalist insists his situation is “completely calm” amid links to the Red Devils and Chelsea.

Tellingly, Romano says there is now a ’50 per cent’ chance of Man Utd sacking Ten Hag after the FA Cup final.

He said in his CaughtOffside column:

“I have had a lot of questions about Erik ten Hag and I understand that the internal process to decide his future at Manchester United is still ongoing, but as I keep saying, the situation is really open. It’s not just about winning the FA Cup final on Saturday, it’s about seeing the team’s performance and attitude, and there is absolutely the possibility that we could see Ten Hag sacked by Man United.

As of now, it is absolutely open and there is a 50-50 chance of Ten Hag leaving Old Trafford, and it is normal that the new owners may consider appointing their ‘own’ manager, but internal talks are still ongoing.” .

With Pochettino set to return straight to management, Romano says he “has the energy to look for a new job” and it is important to “keep an eye on him” amid reports that Ratcliffe “appreciates” him.

As for De Zerbi, it is claimed that the former Brighton manager is not in talks with Chelsea, but would “love” to stay in the Premier League.

Romano added:

“It is also important to say that, at this moment, Chelsea are not talking to Roberto de Zerbi. He is another name we see a lot in the media, but at the moment he is completely silent.

We’ve also seen him linked with dreaming of the Man United job, but I understand he would love to work in the Premier League again, even if it’s not a specific club, he would just love to continue in the Premier League.

It is very open, even the possibilities in other countries could attract De Zerbi. “He really wants to start again as soon as he finds a good project.”
