Netflix’s most-watched Indian movies and shows: Kareena Kapoor’s Jaane Jaan is number one, The Railway Men equals Money Heist Berlin in viewership | Bollywood News

Netflix released the second edition of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report on Thursday. The report lists viewing figures for thousands of movies and shows that aired on the platform between July and December 2023. The first edition of the What We Watched report revealed the key Indian titles that found places in the top 500 of the list, with Rana Naidu. being the most viewed Indian title at number 336. For the second edition, Netflix has separated the series from the programs.

But only one Indian title in each category found a place in the top 100. Director Jaane Jaan by Sujoy Ghoshstarring Kareena Kapoor, Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat, was ranked 83rd on the list of most watched films in the second half of 2023. But although it is not an Indian title, the espionage thriller Heart of stone, with Alia Bhatt in a rare villainous role, was the second most-watched Netflix film on the list, with 109 million views. The other major Indian films that found places in the most viewed list were jawan (number 120, with 16.2 million views), Khufiya (number 194, with 12 million views), OMG 2 (number 224, with 11.5 million views), Stories of lust 2 (number 312, with 9.2 million views), Dream Girl 2 (number 361, with 8.2 million views), and Curry and cyanide: the Jolly Joseph case (number 361, also with 8.2 million views).

The most watched Indian shows were The Railway Men: The Untold Story of Bhopal (1984), which racked up 11 million views and was ranked 139th. Kohrra ranked 267th with 6.4 million views, and Raj & DK’s much more conventional Guns & Gulaabs also garnered the same number of views and ended up at number 267. Kaala Paani ranked 307th with 5.8 million of visits. series like Heeramandi: The diamond bazaarMaamla Legal Hai and The Great Indian Kapil Show were not part of the list because they were released in 2024, as were the films Fighter, Animal and Laapataa Ladies.

Indian programming on Netflix continues to struggle compared to global content. Netflix revealed that 9% of all viewing came from Korean-language movies and shows, while Spanish-language movies and shows contributed 7% of total viewing and Japanese content contributed 5% of total viewing. The most-watched non-English language show during this period garnered almost seven times as many views as The Railway Men, although the four-episode YRF series matched the performance of Money Heist spin-off Berlin. Other notable non-English language titles were dear child (53 million) from Germany, forgotten love (43 million) from Poland, Silence pact (21 million) from Mexico, Masked Girl (19 million) from Korea, Yuyu Hakusho (17 million) from Japan. None of these countries have the audience potential that India has. In the list of films, Jaane Jaan can be proud of having surpassed Wes Anderson’s Oscar winner. The wonderful story of Henry Sugarwhich finished at number 101, and the Oscar-nominated film Nyad, which finished at number 124.
